This is the policy for users of the ChatNet.dk server. If you have an
account or are seeking to get one, these rules apply to you. They are
reasonable in our opinion - they don't stifle your ability to use and
enjoy the services available. They are here to protect our interests
and those of your fellow users who share this machine. You are
responsible for being familiar with this policy and checking it for
updates. If you contradict the policy, I will take your account away
with no warning, and I will not recover your stuff for you.
This machine is a service provided entirely at the staff's own time
and expense, and the connection is provided for free by Infopaq.
Please respect that fact.
[ No account sharing ]
Your account is given to you for your own private use. If someone else wants access, they can signup for one.
[ No idle accounts ]
If your account goes for a long period of time without any online activity (apart from arriving e-mail), we might blow it away with little or no warning. Other people would like accounts, and if you're just taking up space, We've got better things to do with it.
[ Respect disk resources ]
You have a disk quota of 5MB unless you've made other arrangements with the staff. Don't go hunting around on the system for places to hide extra stuff. Don't write scripts that touch files in /tmp to get around the /tmp cleaner, either.
[ Respect system resources ]
Other people use the system, and not just when they're online; e-mail systems, ircd, webserver, etc are running constantly, and running your password cracking package or anything that uses a lot of CPU, memory or I/O impacts the whole machine. If
you'd like to run something that could impact everyone else in some noticeable way, check with the staff first.
[ No bots ]
Do not run bots from your account, unless you have special permission from the admin of this server. There are _no_ exceptions for this rule! NOTE: if you have permission to run a bot for a special purpose (e.g. a project), then use it only for that purpose, and not for any other!
[ No weak passwords ]
Don't pick passwords you use on any other machine
or service in the free world. Don't pick passwords that could be
easily guessed, like your name, your name backwards, your street name,
the name of the machine, the name of your favourite band, the name of
the swooniest guy you've ever seen, your favourite movie, the name of
your pet, or anything of that ilk. Your password should amount to a
random jumble of letters and numbers that you've never ever seen
anywhere before, possibly even some punctuation. At some point in the
not too distant future, the password change code will actually enforce
this on you.
[ Backup ]
You are responsible for making backup of your files. No
automatic backup of the system is made by the staff.
[ No internal hacking ]
Why people try to hack the machine when we
provide it as a favour to them is beyond us, but it happens. If you
find a hole, report it, don't exploit it. You make the machine and
the service it provides better for all the users, and we'll even give
you public accolades for helping us out.
[ No external hacking ]
The last thing we need is an irate system
administrator or law enforcement official sending us e-mails or
phoning us to complain that you tried to access stuff you shouldn't
be accessing. Do it from your own machine and leave us out of it.
[ No spamming ]
Don't use this machine as a launch pad for any sort of
unsolicited e-mail or other mass-distribution of content the recipient
may not want. We will not tolerate this machine being added to a
blacklist of any sort because of it.
[ No illegal activies ]
This include anything that is under the danish
law. E.g. child pornography, MP3, warez, etc.
[ No commercial activities ]
We don't provide this service for free, so
you can earn money on it.
[ Don't make our lifes hard ]
When you're out there on IRC, sending mail,
surfing the web, or whatever, don't do anything that will result in
a valid complaint about you. We don't have the time to deal with
people provoking others, so please don't put us in that position.
Thank you,
The ChatNet Denmark Staff
