The Future Image of ChatNet

What exactly dos CRC do when they are not routing?

That is a fair question. When we aren't knee deep in answering questions, or fielding applications for linking, this is what gets done. What you see here is an imaginary map of the future. Most of the linking strategy is based on the UUNet international backbone model. This is because UUNet is the primary backbone provider for the ChatNet Internet Relay Chat network. The scenario below is something that Spectre cooked up while on vacation (Note to Spectre: get a life).

In the maps below, I have tried to display what would make sense for ChatNet to pursue in regards to its internal growth. Our goal is not to have 200000 servers with 10 people on each one, but rather a global community of servers that act as ChatNet's points of presence. If there are 200 servers on the ChatNet network, they should regionally cover 200 different locations.

NORTH AMERICAN MAP Future

This map represents 100% coverage of North America above the Rio Grande river based on internet usage and population. The colored selections are servers we would like to see in the future.

EU MAP & EAST ASIA Future

This map represents 100% coverage of Europe and western Asia. ChatNet has historically been based in Europe out of the British isles and Scandinavia. we remain true to that in that we have more server representation in these areas than any where else in Europe. This may change in the future. The colored selections represent servers we would like to see in the future.

LATIN MAP Future

This map represents our Latin American coverage. ChatNet has been a notoriously American network for a long time. This is a stigma we wish to break, by bringing on representation of our southern neighbors. The user load from Central and South America as well as Mexico has grown steadily on ChatNet for the past few years. For the first time in ChatNet's history, server administrators from this region are looking at ChatNet for a link. As the user load from Latin America increases, the number of representative servers will increase as well. South America represents the biggest challenge in these server acquisitions. The continental back bone system is unlike any where else in the world. In most situations, the national backbone has a direct uplink to the US. This causes, in many of the South American countries, horrid routing from country to country. In the case of Colombia, the national backbone runs to the US in Miami via a 155MB ATM via a major US carrier. This connection represents almost the entire country. Where the trick to the routing begins is knowing that there is a second player from the US represented in Colombia. the route that they use makes our map below possible. The same can be said of countries such as Argentina and Uruguay. These countries are also very heavily involved in satellite communication. The colored selections represent servers we would like to see in the future.

AFRICA Future

Of all the continents, Africa is the hardest to route. The Internet standards on the continent are far behind Europe and the US. The exceptions to this are areas of heavy US/EU influence. South Africa and Egypt are by far the leaders in technology of the continent. This does not mean that other countries are not moving forward. As Africa moves into the Internet era, ChatNet is poised to welcome them to the Network. Africa is another continent that is heavily based in Satellite traffic. This is because of the enormous costs of laying cable around a continent the size of Africa. Due to the dynamics of international politics, the continental routing for Africa is largely single point routing. It is very rare to find 2 countries that are sharing a backbone. this is why you see below a map that is represented by single end-point servers instead of a hub structure.

OCEANIA & WEST ASIA Future

ChatNet is actively pursuing a Pacific rim sub network. Our lack of presence in Australia and Western Asia represents and inherent weakness to our network. It is important to our routing philosophy to represent the globe. That means with out exception. Over the last 12 months we have had a few applications for linking from this area, but they were not servers of quality. It does not benefit ChatNet nor its users to have an inherently poor server connected. this selectivity, has cost ChatNet Oceanic and Western Asian representation for the last 2½ years. This is a gap that we will fill soon.

This is a global map that reflects the routing schema we would like to see in ChatNet's future. The servers that are reflected here are based on servers that have been linked in the past as well as servers that we are looking to get in the future. They are included more to represent a region then a specific city. If you are considering linking to ChatNet and you do not see your city represented in this map, do not fret. This is a pipe dream and will probably never happen, however, we can always wish :)
