Dear Chatnet Complaints Comitte.

On Wednesday 14th of July at around 11:00 GMT, the hostmask
<http://www.shopperlabs.com>www.shopperlabs.com was banned from the chatnet
network by one of your server operators "DewMe" under Admin "PhAnTaSy" on
Portland.Or.Us.Chatnet.Org.
The declared reason for the Gline was "harrasment".
The persons banned were 1 eggdrop bot and an IRC proxy BNC used by users
Including MRX and Punisher.
On further investigation into the problem it appears that the hostmask was
banned because of a room issue rather than a server issue, hence rendering
the Gline void. Chatnet policy cleary states that opers have normal user
powers within rooms and can be banned opped etc, and are not to use their O
line to interfere with room issues.
The room conserned was #casino_royale, under the channel owner Lady_Di.
The complaint being that an eggdrop bot under the nickname "Aceman" had
entered the room.
As a result of this the bot owner was contacted (after the bot was banned)
and notified of what had happened.
This should of ended the issue.
After a short discussion between MRX and LadyDi in which MRX simply stated
the fact that it was a room issue, he had no knowlege of the bot entering
the room, and that the ban would stop any other users with enoguh access to
the bot to make it join a room, Lady_Di felt the inclination to involve
server operator DewMe, who I believe is a personal friend and therefore in
favour of the channel owner anyway.
Surely DewMe as a qualified network official should of reconized the fact
that this was a room problem and it had allready been resolved by the ban ?
And how the allready resolved issue formed into a C4 Gline with the comment
"Harrasment" I wish to put into question.

As a network admin on irc.tri-net.org, Routing COM on irc.tri-net.org, and
Oper on Portland.Or.Us.Chat-net.org I am shocked that someone trusted with
an O line should behave so irrisposibly and wish to see the O line of DewMe
on Portland.Or.Us.Chatnet.Org revoked untill he can handle the
responsibility, although I doubt i can see this happen.

Regrets

From: "Av"

Recently, you should have recieved an email from Tom Parker reguarding this
same issue about the gline of *@www.shopperlabs.com. (You must bare with me;
I just sprained my finger so I can't type too well...) I setup and
maintaince the bots that run from shopplerlabs.com. As I went onto ChatNet
to do my daily check-up on the bots (Nemesis and HackBot; HackBot being a
bot used to link a channel on chatnet to another channel) when I noticed
that they were not there. This suprised me very much because then when I did
a /stats g, I was exteremly shocked to see that they had been g-lined under
reason "harrasment". Now, according to what I heard, this was a channel
issue and I did a /motd and it clearly states that opers are just like
regular users in other channels and can be kicked/banned and CANNOT use
their oper powers. Well, I guess you could have to kick/ban the bot if it
was disturbing the channel but a gline?! And 2 bots + a BNC ended up glined
instead of just one little kick/ban! I find this EXTREMELY shocking that an
experianced oper such as DewMe to take such extrodonary messure on such a
little issue! And I would also appreciate a full explanation on the gline
because the reason "harassment" really doesn't tell me much. Please tell me
so I can make sure not to make that mistake again...because now I have all
these channel owners complaining about it...Well, I appreciate it and thank
you for taking the time to read this email.

Opercom has chosen to dismiss any allegations by the accusers.   We feel
that further investigation into this matter is not necessary as DewMe has
been an experienced IRC Operator well-qualified to make such decisions as
the G-line in question.
